Our Story

Ubuntu is an African term that speaks to our shared humanity, the experience of connection that crosses cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, political, gender and gender identity lines. We are social animals, and high-quality relationships are vital to our health and wellbeing across life. For young people, safe, supportive and consistent relationships with adults are non-negotiable for healthy development, setting the stage for youth to not only beat the odds, but to change the odds for generations to come.

Sport is a unique relational context where the spirit of ubuntu is rich with possibility. It is a space where coaches, parents and athletes can meet in a field beyond right-doing and wrong-doing to nurture the seeds of health, self-narrative, identity and human potential for young people to grow into the best possible versions of themselves. Sport is also the #1 place that youth, who by definition are at the peak developmental period for habit formation across life, choose to go after school.

Sport, done well, changes lives.

Sport is a highly underutilized context for positive youth development.

Ubuntu is the secret sauce.

The Ubuntu Foundation seeks to activate sport, via the relationships therein, to support global flourishing.
